Pocketful Of Dreams

I’m super excited because I’ll be DJing at The Beaver¬†tonight along with my best pal (and techno aficionado) Karl Skene. We originally named our party¬†Big Fun in reference to the classic dance hit by Inner City, but have since discovered a little known UK boy-band from the early 90s of the same name. Big Fun (the band) was comprised of Phil Creswick, Mark Gillespie and Jason John, three closeted gays who feared that coming out would ruin their careers. Their only full-length album, Pocketful Of Dreams, was a both a commercial and critical flop and sadly the group disappeared from the scene as quickly as they arrived.

Interestingly, it was the band’s original intention to release a cover of Carole King’s “I Feel The Earth Move” (featured above) as a lead single, but the track was bumped by their label at the last minute in favour of another cut called “Blame It On The Boogie”. Adding insult to injury, an alternate rendition of “I Feel The Earth Move” (below) was recorded by American pop-star Martika just months later and became an instant top ten hit.

We’ll be celebrating the work of both artists (and many more) tonight from 10 pm until late at The Beaver, 1192 Queen St. in West Toronto. No cover, no excuses!

Just for (big) fun, here’s the Carole King original…
